Zhardis

The Undying, Memory's Bane, Memory's Blessing, Queen of Eternal Sorrows

The desire for immortality drives Zhardis' followers. Her realm is beautiful undeath: all that lives must decay, all that grows must wither. Only in unchanging death may perfection be preserved. True believers scorn all that is perishable, preferring to immortalize themselves in marble and metal rather than transient materials such as wood and canvas. Stories abound of Zhardians who have murdered their lovers and preserved their remains in order to deny the ravages of time.

Memory and forgetfulness are another aspect of the Zhardian faith, for in remembrance lies another path to eternity. The Circle of Nightingales, a shadowy organization of her worshipers, is dedicated to preserving knowledge that would otherwise be lost to time. The goddess' blessing is twofold: she can obliterate painful memories or keep them forever intact. Few of her worshipers do not harbor some secret sorrow; the price of immortality is watching others die.

Zhardis is worshiped primarily by necromancers and assassins, though she attracts the proud and embittered from every race and profession. The aspect of bittersweet memory brings poets and musicians into her fold; it is no accident that one of her primary symbols is the nightingale-in-mourning. Zhardis is most often portrayed as a raven-haired woman with violet eyes, crowned by and enthroned on bleached bone.
