====__**The White Seas**__====
On the far northern coast of Meditra are the White Seas: an ever-frozen ocean where bitter blue waters surge beneath shelves of salty ice, where exposed skin freezes in moments and where winter reigns all through the year, except for a few brief weeks of summer. Winds constantly blow across the snow-flecked icepacks, creating the illusion of endless snowstorms, although in truth the inland regions are quite dry, seeing very little rain or snowfall. This is the homeland of the White Seas tribes, who collectively make up most of the AEsir of Meditra.
The White Seas' icy shores expand in the cold seasons and recede -- slightly -- during the short summers. During the winters, the ocean is saltier, due to the influence of the sea ice freezing up the less saline water. During the summers, there is sometimes a "green bloom" or "red bloom" on the waters, as algae take advantage of the long daylight hours to fill the sea. The tribes go out onto the sea ice to scoop up this algae, drying it in thin papery sheets to eat when the long winter's night settles in again.

Walruses and small whales also live in the region, as do great white bears which prey on the seals. Fish are plentiful and make up most of the local tribes' diets. Aquatic hunting also serves as the mainstay for the frost giants of the [[WhiteKeep White Keep]], who dislike even the marginally warmer temperatures of the inland reaches.
Inland, the land becomes what one writer described as "the great gray-green desert." There are no trees, for none could survive the aridity, cold, and howling winds of the White Seas. Instead the tundra is carpeted with lichens, spongy dry mosses, and summer grasses and sedges. Short-lived wildflowers spring up during the summers; entire fields of yellow and orange poppies can be seen then, as well as scarlet firedragons and brilliant blue forget-me-nots. Dwarf shrubs, including low-lying blueberries, grow in the warmer and more wind-sheltered areas.
Animal life is also more plentiful and diverse in the inland regions. Almost all of the small animals change color with the seasons: hares, mice, voles and foxes are all brown in the short summers and white in the winters. Because luxuriant fur is a necessity to survive the punishing winters, and the snow-white color is a rarity in southern climes, all these animals are valuable to trappers. Their pelts are one of the main trade goods exported from the region.
Larger animals, such as reindeer, wolves and musk oxen, can be found in the southern reaches of the White Seas region. Black and brown bears roam among them, as do greater and more terrible predators. The majority of the "White Seas tribes" actually live in this warmer, more hospitable territory, rather than on the shores of the frozen sea.
