The Westgate Council
Structure:
The Westgate Council currently consists of five members, although this number can be changed by a unanimous vote of the Council. Indeed, the traditional number of Councilors is eight, but was decreased a few years ago when the current leader of the Council, Artur din Calot, came to power. Elections are held semi-regularly - at the Council's convenience in politically stable times, and at the behest of the temple's wealthiest patrons is more tumultuous ones. Anyone who donates to the temple is entitled to vote in Council elections, but the strength of one's vote is determined by the scope of one's contributions to Westgate, both monetarily and in services. This means that the Council's composition is often reflective of the whims of a few very powerful individuals and families.
Current Members:
Artur din Calot - The leader of Westgate's Council and a powerful paladin in his own right, Artur maintains his power and status by being the consummate administrator. In the few years since he assumed leadership, the temple has seen its coffers swell significantly as a result of Artur's gift for soliciting donations and his uncanny ability to uncover petty corruption. Artur is known as a steadfast politician who does not take many risks; he prefers to deal with problems quietly, but when he strikes out against an opponent he does not miss. Despite being rather aged for a human, Artur remains in excellent health, and few Falcon patrons would be willing to see Westgate leave the care of his capable hands.
Decepa din Calot - The wife of Artur din Calot's has held her seat on the Council for longer than anyone else, excepting her husband. She is known in courtly circles as a tireless patron of the arts - in addition to running a few arts-based charities, she sits on the boards of or owns shares in a variety of theaters, acting troupes, galleries, and musical groups. Although it is a secret she conceals well, more than a few Falcons are aware that she was trained as a mystic. No one is sure of the extent of her power, but those who know of it believe it is the driving force behind her husband's success as Westgate's figurehead.
Imina de Cour - This elderly human priestess is a member of one of the most influential Falcon families in the city. The de Cours have a minor claim to nobility and are generally successful in their business enterprises, but their power within the temple derives from two sources: their steadfast ties to their religion and their family. The de Cours give almost all of their disposable income to Westgate, and more often than not the family's offspring benefit from temple training. Imina's cousins, nieces, nephews, and her daughter make up a sizeable minority of the priesthood. What is more, the de Cours never fail to vote as a block, ensuring that the head of the family (currently Imina) is a force to be reckoned with in Temple politics. The de Cours often put their support behind a non-family member, but for reasons she has kept to herself Imina recently decided to make a bid for a seat personally. Imina's recent infirmity have led many to wonder who will take over leadership of the de Cour clan when she is gone.
Eidolon Bliss - The adventurer and enchanter, known to many as "Eden," gained his seat on the Council with the backing of his former mentor, Artur. While remaining close to the Council leader, Eden has slowly consolidated his own base of power, shoring up political support from many of the more religious (some might say fanatical) members of the faith. At the same time, he has begun to carefully separate himself from the din Calots during key strategic votes. Although it is a subject of much speculation whether or not Eden has the backing to maintain his seat absent Artur's assistance, his ruthless reputation and magical prowess have thus far warded off any challenges.
Ryen Debrui - Formerly Westgate's ranking Inquisitor, Ryen was able to gain a seat on the Council with campaign promises of rooting out heretics within Westgate. While his expanded powers as a Councilor have allowed him to uncover minor illicit activities in some quarters, rumor has it that lack of concrete results has convinced his backers to withdraw their support. It is widely assumed that unless Ryen is able to uncover or fabricate evidence of the heresy at which his campaign speeches hinted, the next election will see him unseated.
Former Members:
Anadese Syrufin - Despite being the political enemy of most of the current composition of the Council, the andafox Anadese Syrufin and her son, a paladin named Kierese, are political forces to be reckoned with. Although Anadese lost her seat on the Council years ago in a coup cleverly orchestrated by Artur din Calot, most believe that she is merely biding her time until an attempt to reclaim her position presents itself.
