There are few places as oppressive or alien to the natural world as the Wall of Knives. It represents an almost impassable obstacle along Ardashir’s northern reaches. Surrounded on most sides by flat expanses of uninhabitable desert, the Wall of Knives is a mountain range that runs north to south, spanning up to two-hundred miles across and nearly five-hundred miles in length. Popular trading routes detour around the range and several strategically-connected (and brigand-infested) underground caverns provide transportation directly through the region.
There are few natural resources within the mountain range. Rare but vast deposits of silver, iron, and semi-precious gemstones litter the region. The land is ecologically starved, composed mostly of thermophilic aberrations, small mammals and reptiles, and giant arthropods. Several spined, and sometimes poisonous, varieties of cacti dominate the exceedingly scarce flora.
Unlike most ranges, the mountains within the Wall of Knives have no ice caps. There exists almost no precipitation and the area regularly suffers violent wind- and sandstorms. The range has few peaks stable or high enough to be granted names; instead of massive mountains, the treacherous nature of the ridge is a result of its dry and brittle composition. The weak stone, undergoing extreme and hostile forces of nature, makes mapping the region a futile effort since valleys and mountainsides regularly collapse. Travelers should beware that rocks from this region easily shatter and splinter underfoot, giving the range its characteristic name.
There are few permanent inhabitants within the Wall of Knives and vast regions of the range remain unexplored. A majority of the region’s inhabitants are seasonal miners and goat herders, who rarely negotiate deeper than the outermost reaches. A few scant permanent villages inhabit the region but it is unclear how these settlements survive. Such remote places are so rarely visited by outsiders that there exists no reliable estimate for population. These groupings are considered under the reign of Ardashir but possess no political, financial, or military influence.
