Vampires

The term "vampire" encompasses two very distinct types of undead: greater vampires and lesser vampires. Both greater and lesser vampires arise when a powerful being dies and is cursed with undeath, but greater vampires typically choose their fate, whereas lesser vampires are victims of circumstance, curse, or sin. Both types feed on the blood of living things and draw power from that blood, but only greater vampires retain the intelligence and self-control to plan their feedings and conceal them from possible reprisal.

Vampires share certain traits in folklore, though which of these are true and which the product of groundless superstition is unknown to those who have not tested the myths in the field. They are vulnerable to a stake through the heart; indeed, stakes, beheading, and complete immersion in holy water are sometimes said to be the only ways of permanently killing the creatures. They avoid daylight, and sleep in coffins while the sun is in the air. Garlic, silver, and holy symbols repel them. Rats, bats, and black dogs are their spies, or even the vampires themselves, shapechanged.
