Undead

The classification of "undead" includes all creatures which once lived and, after death, were animated by some magical force. Most commonly this is negative energy drawn from the Infernal, Abyssal, or Shadow Planes; however, some rare forms of undead draw their animating energy from another source. Undead which are animated by dark forces are usually vulnerable to divine powers.
Undead may be corporeal or insubstantial. They range from the weakest skeletons to some of the most powerful beings to walk Bierilon, including liches, death knights and greater vampires. Most undead are impervious to poison and disease, cannot be waylaid, and -- as they no longer require vital organs to function -- suffer no ill effects from an assassin's surgical stab.
A person killed by undead may be cursed with undeath herself if left unconsecrated. Fortunately, any priest or paladin is capable of performing the basic rites that sanctify a corpse and prevent this from happening; unfortunately, it is not always possible to reach such a person in time. The curse of undeath usually takes hold on the night after the person's demise.
