Athair Veldefae
The name of this inn translates to "The Wood of Memory" in the Elvish high tongue. In the last few years, as more elves are driven from their ancestral forests due to the wars ravaging the borders of the Elven Forests near the Twelve Kingdoms, Athair Veldefae has become a central gathering point for both refugee elves and those who have lived in Coeur d'Ennui for years. It is located in the west quarter of the city, not far from the blue marble shrine to Syalus.
Owned by Cyrial Starborne, an illusionist known to dabble in enchantment magics, the inn seems to be as lovely as an illusion itself. Blue-leaved mistwood trees rise up through holes cut in the floor, stretching up to the glass-domed ceiling. By day, the inn's common room is lit by sunlight filtered through the mistwood trees; by night, tiny motes of silvery mage-light float in the air to augment the moons and stars.
The Copper Dragon
Very few people stay in the Copper Dragon, and indeed the tavern has no rooms to rent other than a few cramped, miserable garrets above its raucous common room. Located in the rougher South Side of the city, the Copper Dragon is carefully unremarkable in its surroundings. There are occasional brawls, the ale is watered -- but not enough so to drive the drinking clientele away -- and the place is best known as an unexceptional tavern frequented by dockhands and low-level thugs. Odd faces are occasionally seen in the Copper Dragon, however, and the crowd is sometimes more eclectic than such an unexceptional tavern should draw.
The Empty Bottle Tavern
This establishment, located on the west end of King’s Way, is owned and operated by the halfling bard, turned tavern proprietor, Rolo Emptybottle. In the center of one of the wealthier neighborhoods in the Coeur, this tavern caters to the upper crust of the New City, but is accessible to people of all races and social status. The Empty Bottle has amenities of all sizes to ensure that no customer segment is left unsatisfied. An example of this are the gaming tables, which can be lowered or raised, with simple hand cranks, allowing both halflings and æsirs to enjoy the same facilities.
The Goblin's Skull
Owned by a man named Clayton Tulliver, this exceedingly seedy South Side locale is linked with the dominant cartel of that area. It is widely known as a reliable place to go for shady deals, although the fact that it is so well-known means that the quality of goods is often less reliable than usual, and the prices usually inflated. Nevertheless, the Goblin's Skull is popular as a place to begin inquiries, particularly among those not well-acquainted enough with the depths of the city's underworld to have more specialized contacts. It is located a few blocks north of the western docks, just outside the Pipers' territory.
The Orcs' Nest
A filthy, dingy dockside tavern located in one of the worst parts of the Coeur's South Side, the Orcs' Nest is marked by two orcish spears thrust into the ground on either side of its door, each bearing the shriveled remains of the head of the warrior who once bore the weapon.
The building is noted for its low ceilings, gloomy lighting, and tendency to host violent brawls almost every night. It is frequented mainly by dwarves. Humans rarely venture into the Orcs' Nest, but this is as much because of the inn's rumored connections to the Ironaxe clan of duergar 'enforcers' as because of the violence.
The Reed Piper
One of the oldest inns in Coeur d'Ennui, the three-story Reed Piper is famous as a haunting ground for traveling bards and minstrels. Longstanding tradition holds that new songs, poems and acts must be performed in the Reed Piper for good luck before being taken out the nearby West Gate onto the road; similarly, new acts being brought into the city must be tested in the Reed Piper before being shown to wider audiences. Because it offers constant free entertainment and one of the best selections of local wines and ales to be found in Coeur d'Ennui, this is one of the most popular and crowded establishments in the city.
For the past twenty-odd years, the Reed Piper has been run by a woman known to all as Mistress Hopewell. Now in her late sixties or early seventies, Mistress Hopewell still has the bawdy sense of humor that served her so well in her youth, although at this stage in her life it's more nostalgia than anything else. A half-orc bouncer known as Durok is her longtime right-hand man.
The Reed Piper is one of the best places in the city to find information on goings-on in the wider world. Bards who have recently returned from long travels are often willing to share their observations and experiences in exchange for a new song, news of recent happenings within Coeur d'Ennui, or a few gold pieces. Unlike most places in the city, being able to gain the trust of the patrons here is less a question of being in touch with the pulse of the city's streets than being able to demonstrate fellowship in the brotherhood of minstrels and performers.
The Rogue's Rest
A quiet little inn on the northern end of the city's South Side, the Rogue's Rest used to be a hub of information and secret deals. Since the mysterious demise of its well-connected owner, Albert Kessler, at the hands of the Strangler, the establishment has declined in its underworld prominence and is now almost exactly what it appears to be on the surface.
The Silver Serpent
This upscale North Side establishment was recently gutted by a fire that burned through it in the wake of a massive and lethal brawl. The proprietor, Neville Sheridan, was found dead shortly afterward, presumably at the hands of the Strangler. The tavern is undergoing repairs but has not yet reopened for business since that disaster.
The Swan's Rest Inn
Situated in the north quarter of the city, the Swan's Rest Inn is a quiet, decorous place that caters to moderately affluent merchants, farmers, and rural landholders staying in the city. The rates are reasonable, although set slightly high to keep poorer elements out, and the accommodations comfortably low-key. Because it is a popular place for lesser nobles and merchants to meet for illicit assignations, the Swan's Rest has a few measures to protect the privacy of these patrons. For a small additional cost, rooms can be rented that have hidden back doors leading out to the walled garden behind the inn, and meals can be delivered directly to the rooms by discreet servants. Although it is not unheard-of for these servants to be bribed for information afterwards, those who value their jobs at the Swan's Rest are infamous for lying to protect the patrons' identities.
