Occasionally contracted as mercenaries but more often maligned by organized countries, Tartessos exists as both an artifact of a more wild, lawless world as well as a staple of the modern world of Parthysis. Free from the constraints and difficulties associated with countries that have neighbors, and drawing upon massive numbers of immigrants, slaves, refugees and otherwise that both come to their shores and are captured from vessels at sea, Tartessos boasts a fractured yet impressive naval force. The country has perhaps the largest 'black' market in the world relative to its size, if for no other reason than its entire economic structure could be considered just that. What legal trade exists in the country is limited to growth of sugar cane and spices toward the interior of the island, though even this is usually traded in such a manner as to avoid tarriffs for importing or exporting of goods from nations in Meditra.
The island is surrounded by a torrent of high winds and dangerous currents which threaten to break the hulls of vessels which come too near against expanses of jagged cliffs and shallows which ring its perimeter. Particularly to the southern directions from the island, coral atolls and shoals extend out from the main island like curved fingers, interconnecting to form a vast, intricate and treacherous shallows that span for many leagues. Further, there are many myths and legends speaking of curses and creatures associated with the island, inspiring panic among sailors not accustomed to sailing the already difficult waters. These are among the decisive reasons for the country's existence despite the rise of much larger, more powerful nations on the mainlands to the north, east and west.
Despite the unique conditions surrounding the island and the miles of cliffs which make up much of its coastline, there are also multiple natural harbors located all along the island's form, giving shelter to the many vessels which pass through the area and, in some cases, established towns and cities.
