Sigilstar Hall and the Shrieking Oak

Twin marble spires towering above the lush jungles of northern Aridoc mark the manmade horror that is Sigilstar Hall. It was named after a fixed star in the heavens that all other stars seem to revolve around, but has since been abandoned by the Phet S’nar faithful who constructed it centuries ago. The grand library now has a dead, tomblike air about it even though the building’s windows have long surrendered to the elements and decades of neglect have exposed portions of the hall to the muggy winds of the Center Seas. Great chunks of stone have tumbled into the surrounding forests, but the hall’s main structure still triumphs like a never-healing scar.

Locals speak of the abandoned Phet S’nar library with venomous curses, citing the growing ring of dead vegetation that surrounds the once-glorious building and the haunted woods beyond as eternal evil. The halls and surrounding forests are said to be crawling with abhorrent activity: detestable, blood-crazed creatures have claimed the ruins as their own and rumors suggest nefarious cults infrequently use the hall for dark sacrifices and meeting places. Adventurers and pilgrims rarely visit the once-holy place, entering its wicked grounds through mistake, trickery, or calamitous temptation.

Wandering spirits of the insane are said to roam the cursed area, gibbering incoherently and giving the woodland its howling reputation. Bizarre lights lazily roam the wood at night, flying to and from the great hall. Undead are not uncommon in the forest’s denser portions, where the corruption-tainted bodies of undiscovered Phet S’nar members have remained undiscovered for all these years.

The long road that leads to Sigilstar Hall is still dotted with civilization, including the nearby village of Raurin that unofficially marks the Shrieking Oak’s edge. The backwater town sees little outside influence, relying on hunting, farming, and infrequent travelers to support its tiny population. There, legend of the Sigilstar Hall and its downfall are common knowledge. Perhaps self-servingly, the townsfolk speak of immense knowledge and wealth still hidden in the hall’s abandoned ground, waiting for bold tomb raiders to reclaim.
