Sulfate Free Shampoo

Shampoos that contain Ammonium Laureth Sulfate (ALES) are sometimes advertised alongside Sulfates as an alternative to SLS and SLES products. While ALES continues to be a sulfate, certain companies indicate the fact that this is a different sulfate from SLS or SLES. Most of these companies point out a research undertaken by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review which found ALES being an effective cleansing agent and evidently safe when used discontinuously and after use followed by thorough rinsing of the hair and body.

Most mainstream shampoos come with sulfates. Sulfates have the effect of creating the rich, bubbly lather we love. They are affordable and easy to find costing a quarter per pound. The highest priced sulfates run only a dollar per single pound. Sulfates are excellent cleaners, capable at dissolving dirt and oil. As a result, they work very well in body washes and shampoo.

ALES may be created from animal fats or from natural ingredients like coconut oil. It is thought that the larger molecules found in ALES mean that it is less irritating to the skin than SLS based shampoos. The reason for this belief is that the larger molecules are less likely to permeate the skin than the smaller molecules found in Sodium Lauryl Sulfate.
