The skill "Read Magic" is necessary to read or use a scroll. A successful Read Magic skill check is needed to find out what spell is on the scroll.
//**Writing Scrolls**//
PCs may create scrolls, with the following guidelines:
1) The PC must be at least ten levels above the spell being transcribed. This restriction does not apply to the creation of nonmagical scrolls.
2) The PC must have a lab of at least the level of the spell. Furthermore, the PC must spend 1000 ss to upgrade his lab to facilitate the creation of scrolls. This fee need only be paid once.
3) The cost to create a magical scroll is 8 ss per spell level. The cost to create a nonmagical scroll is 40 ss per spell level.
4) To create a scroll, the PC must make a roll against (MA + IQ + Read Magic)/3 - (Spell Level x 2). A character can create up to 5 levels of scrolls per week. If multiple scrolls are created in a week, each requires its own roll. If the roll is failed, the materials are wasted. If a 100 is rolled, the caster takes 3BC10 damage, and must pay 10 ss per point of damage to repair his lab.
5) Magical Theory grants a bonus of MT/5 to the above formula, and a bonus of MT/2 to the creation of scrolls of spells created by the PC him or herself.
6) A PC creating a scroll of a spell outside of his base list suffers a -15 penalty to the creation roll. A cross-listed spell effectively belongs to whichever list in which it has the highest level (for example, if a spell is Level 2 Mysticism/Level 9 Enchantment, the spell counts as belonging to the Enchantment list). Should the spell be of equal level in both lists, it counts as belonging to the caster's base list, if applicable.
//**Magical Spell Scrolls**//
A magical spell scroll is a one-use item. Its use is not restricted to any specific classes, regardless of what the spell is, because the magic is actually imbued directly into the scroll and needs only to be released and the directed by someone reading the scroll. In order to activate a magical spell scroll, a character must first be able to read it, which means he must possess the skill Read Magic and make a successful check.
//Note:// Rituals require the same amount of time to read as to cast. Sustainable spells written as scrolls will last for the initial duration, after which they may be sustained at normal Power cost.
When he wishes to activate the scroll, he makes a [Read Magic + Magical Aptitude - Spell Level x2] skill check. Whether or not the roll is successful, the scroll is expended. If a 100 (or 1) is rolled, the effect is the same as if the spell would have been cast with a roll of 100 (or 1).
//**Non-Magical Spell Scrolls**//
A non-magical spell scroll is essentially an instruction manual explaining how to cast a specific spell. A successful Read Magic skill check is needed to find out what spell is on the scroll. In order to actually learn the spell for the character's use, an additional roll of I.Q. + (MT/5) is needed, and the character must spend 50ss per spell level in materials. If the scroll describes a spell from the character's base spell list (eg, an illusionist learning an illusion spell), 15 will be subtracted from the roll. If the roll fails, the character can try again the next session. If the roll succeeds, the spell will be added to the character's repertoire, and the scroll will be expended.
//**Selling Scrolls**//
Scrolls may be sold to other characters or the Marketplace.
The Marketplace value of magical spell scrolls is 10ss per spell level. The Marketplace value of non-magical spell scrolls is 50ss per spell level.
