Swift and sharp-eyed, the scout is an information gatherer and advance set of eyes for her companions. Scouts are frequently employed by armies on the move. Reclusive communities, such as wild elves' and some zephyr enclaves, keep scouts on patrol to warn against intruders and maintain the lines of perimeter traps that protect their hidden homes. Border towns in hard-pressed human lands may look to their scouts to keep them apprised of local goblin and orc activity, and to ride as swift messengers to other towns in time of need.

Adventuring scouts are always in high demand. Whether investigating musty dungeon corridors in search of hidden traps or sneaking up to an ogres' campfire to count the number of enemies ahead, the scout is prized for her ability to venture unseen ahead of her group and bring back information that others would never notice at all. While a scout who intends to make her living as an adventurer is well advised to obtain some practical weapons training or learn to use magical scrolls to help her party in a fight, combat is not the scout's area of expertise.

The primary difference between scouts and rogues is that the first group tends to come from a less urban background. Scouts are unlikely to be acquainted with the city's underworld when they first arrive in Coeur d'Ennui, and they are not often trained as lockbreakers in the way that a rogue who grew up in an urban thieves' guild might have been. However, scouts are much more adept at surviving in the wilderness. They can find food to sustain a party where others would starve alone, track their prey for miles across unforgiving terrain, and lead lost wanderers unerringly back to safety with nothing more than the open sky to guide them.
