Scarlet
Association: The Vampire Cabal
Rank: First Generation
Notes:
Second only to Moritas in leadership of the vampire cabal, Scarlet is a stunningly beautiful woman with raven-black hair, brilliant golden eyes, and a flawless porcelain complexion. She is extraordinarily vain and cruel, sometimes irrationally so: when the Anvhadian priest and Parthenon-based adventurer Enaris Betak came to the vampires' attention, Scarlet had him "prove his loyalty" by cutting off the face of his friend and "slave" Isis Servitude. Scarlet then turned the face into a leather mask, forcing Isis to wear her own enchanted face to cover her horrific scarring. This whole episode, which fully came to light only after both adventurers died, appears to have been motivated by the vampire's notion of humor and not much more.
More is known about Scarlet's background than that of any other vampire in the cabal. Her parents were Tarentos and Daralla Oshira, a pair of minor illusionists who ran the Shadow Company, a theatrical troupe. The Oshiras eventually settled in the Coeur's entertainment district and founded Ye Olde Shadowplay, a theater specializing in plays augmented with expert puppetry, shadow-screens, and illusions. The Oshiras were a happy but only modestly successful couple, in part because they gave away tickets to their performances to the city's poor, hoping to broaden cultural awareness and simply provide a pleasant diversion to the Coeur's citizens.
Some thirteen years ago, when Scarlet would have been in her early teens or perhaps slightly younger, the Shadowplay burned down in a great fire that also destroyed several other buildings on the block. The entire Oshira family, except for Scarlet and a single family friend, perished in the blaze. It now appears that the fire was the result of an arson committed at the behest of Earl Danvaer, who hoped to purchase several properties -- including Ye Olde Shadowplay -- on that block, renovate them, and resell them for a profit in an increasingly gentrified neighborhood. When the Oshiras refused to sell their theater, he hired a man to scare them out by setting a fire in the Shadowplay. Although the arson was not intended to be fatal, it was ineptly done and so flared out of control.
What became of Scarlet in the decade between the burning of Ye Olde Shadowplay and her return to Coeur d'Ennui is unknown. When she resurfaced, it was as a shadow-specialized illusionist of exceptional power and a greater vampire. Like the others in her generation, she vanished after completing her Ascension. Unlike the others, she returned to the Coeur approximately a year later, executing an elaborate plot that culminated in the assassination of Earl Danvaer and a massive fire that destroyed the Night Raven Theatre, another playhouse in the city's western quarter.
Since accomplishing her revenge, Scarlet has vanished again. Her future plans remain a mystery.
