Located somewhere within the southern stretch of the Wall of Knives, Riniyad is a tiny village completely secluded from the outside world. The community is locked on an unremarkable mountainside in a sea of treacherous, and virtually impassible, terrain.
At the height of Andashir’s success, Riniyad stood as a testament to the mining industry. Work was abundant and the wealthy population thrived off of a pair of diamond mines in its mountain base. As a result, the robust city maintained a very tangible influence over Ardashir, both economically and fashionably. Riniyad diamonds, and their unique silvery olive hue, became symbols of sophistication and status, displayed on anyone who was anyone.
When the mines finally went bare, the city spent its treasury recruiting prospectors and specialists to survey the land for untapped sources. These attempts thoroughly failed and an influx of expert magic-users began making a living by relocating its citizens to other areas of the country. Within twenty years, the city of Riniyad became a desolate ghost town victim to its own voguish accord. With its supply collapsed, the peculiar diamonds fell out of popular culture; the gemstones still resurface in the adventuring world, and a professional jeweler or knowledgeable seller can find interested collectors in any major city.
There is some dispute over whether the timing of the barren mines might have impacted the crumble of Ardashir’s economy. Historians traditionally cite these events as independent tragedies, but the ill-timed ruin of a city so influential certainly fanned the flames of an already-brewing depression.
Today, there are no natural resources in or around Riniyad. The secluded mountain is far too dry for agriculture and too steep for goat herding. Along the mountain’s upper reaches, fanciful and precariously-supported buildings stand in eerie defiance against an otherwise lifeless landscape.
Despite the desolation, a tiny community inhabited Riniyad as recently as fifteen years ago. Those people who remained behind – those too poor, too ill, or too sentimental to make the move – had become de facto lords of their abandoned city and made a living salvaging what was left behind. Communication with the outside world ceased altogether when the sole merchant to the region failed to return. It is unclear what, if any, ill-fate has befallen the forgotten village but no one with the resources seems interested enough to find out.
