Perhaps the farthest still-controlled branch of the Ardasi empire, Plateia is a bastion of economic prosperity. Originally colonized as an outpost of The Holy Empire Aridoc controlling a southern strip of the Cathilcarn mountains, the area’s natural barriers nurtured an unruly sanctuary for political and religious extremists. Historians cite increased taxation and increasing religious influence as the final events to spur the city’s independence; what followed was a monthlong stand-off between the Ardasi and Ardocian armies that did little to ease international relations. This unsteady stalemate formalized the Cathilicarn range as a northeastern border for the Holy Empire Aridoc and discouraged latter attempts to further colonize the northern continent.
Welcomed as liberators, Ardashir financed innovative (and usually unethical) labor and commerce practices to saturate the city’s economy. Plateia’s placement between Ardashir and the city-empire of Pelos was ideal as a waypoint for landlocked trade between the empires. Agricultural innovations and experimentation excelled a new avenue for commerce: once-barren wastelands along the Cathilcarn range became a fertile landscape for exotic hydrophobic fruit. The spices and flora grown here became famous as a delicacy for the rich and influential worldwide.
Due to its lenient sovereignty and geography straddling nations of two dynamically-contrasting philosophies, the city has adopted a reputation as refuge for less-acceptable beliefs. Indeed it is not rare, or even uncommon, for citizens to profess malevolent and radical religions without fear of prosecution; vile powers too small or too abnormal to find a foothold in other cities have found tolerant sanctuary in the region. This only bolsters the city’s prevalent market for flesh and forced labor, slaves generally taken or bought illegally from the free lands to the west and south.
