Phoenix

image

Appearance: A phoenix is a great bird that appears to be a creature of living flame. Its body measures ten to fifteen feet from beak to tail; its wingspan may stretch over forty feet. It vaguely resembles a sleek, crested eagle, but there is no mistaking its plumage for that of any natural bird. A phoenix is feathered in gold, crimson and scarlet; its eyes are bright as living coals, and its talons shine like burnished brass. Waves of heat shimmer in the air around its body.

Known Behaviors: Little is known about the behavior of phoenixes, for they are not native to Bierilon and live in proud solitude in the Vale of Stars. They have no patience for evil and attack it relentlessly, but they have no interest in the petty conflicts of the mortal world and seldom answer any call for allies there. Like their distant raptor cousins, they are remorseless and haughty, but are creatures of good -- if a fierce and militant good -- nonetheless.

Phoenixes have great symbolic importance in numerous cultures across Meditra. They are sometimes welcomed as heralds of divine favor and good fortune to come, and sometimes feared as harbingers of catastrophe. Their ability to renew themselves through cataclysmic death -- and the fact that anyone near such a cataclysm is likely to be destroyed themselves -- makes them a powerful emblem of both rebirth and disaster.

Known Range: Vale of Stars, Amalthir.
