Paladin

In the common view, a paladin is a holy warrior dedicated to one of the goodly gods. There is some truth to this notion. Many, if not most, paladins are champions of honor, mercy, and unswerving justice in a frequently savage world. Their exalted status tempts some toward pride, however. Paladins who see the world in stark black-and-white terms of self-damning evil or precarious innocence are not uncommon, and are frequently regarded as stiff-necked at best, dangerously fanatical at worst. A few paladins openly serve evil deities, delighting in the spread of death and destruction, though by far the majority are oriented toward nobler ends.

Paladins often take an active role in the government of goodly lands. Their temples and citadels are beacons of light and inspiration in times of peace, fiercely-defended strongholds in times of war. In lands crushed under brutal rule, paladins can be found working in secret among the oppressed populace, doing what they can to undermine unjust lords while relieving the sufferings of the oppressed. Paladins are also quick to carry their crusade onto the adventuring path, seeking out the hidden refuges and wellsprings of evil to stamp them out.

A paladin is primarily a defensive fighter with some healing ability. Most specialize in close-quarters combat, and also take some training in first aid for the battlefield -- a skill that their adventuring companions consider a pure blessing after a rough fight. The paladin is also gifted with divine powers to enhance his service in his god's name. These are often useful, and it would be a foolish paladin who neglected to use the blessings his deity had provided, but paladins do not rely as heavily on the power of prayer as do their priestly brethren.
