Ombrathond
One of Bierilon's five Child Realms, Ombrathond is a half-real world of utter darkness. The fabric of Ombrathond, and of all things native to it, is shadow -- black and cold, weightless and amorphous, phasing into and out of corporeality. The things that dwell there are sentient but of limited intelligence, mere formless nightmares driven by their envy of the creatures of the true world, Bierilon.
The only light in Ombrathond comes in through its borders with Bierilon; wherever there is a shadow in Bierilon, there is a coterminous window of light in Ombrathond. These borders are called "surfaces." Creatures in Ombrathond are able to look through them into Bierilon, just as a mermaid looks out from beneath the surface of the water. Shadow creatures conduct these observations in order to better imitate life in Bierilon, to spy for masters on far planes, or simply out of masochistic curiosity.
Farther into Ombrathond, where the light of Bierilon fades, are the deeps: a wretched swamp of undifferentiated, oily blackness, home to nameless horrors, mindless, ancient behemoths. No native of Bierilon can survive there for long without the protection of powerful magic. Safe passage through the deeps is highly prized, as from there one can quickly reach any of the surfaces leading back to Bierilon.
