Nereid

Appearance: A nereid's beauty is less alien, and more elemental, than that of her freshwater kin. Nereids appear as slender young women with flowing blue or green hair and eyes and lips of the same hue. They are usually glimpsed from beneath the water or while sitting on sea-sprayed rocks and singing their eerie, enchanting melodies through the pounding tumult of a storm. Nereids' moods are as changeable as those of the sea; one moment they are serene, the next wild.
Known Behaviors: Nereids are said to be the wildest of the nymphs, and certainly they are among the most capricious. Sailors alternately revere and curse them; the sight of a nereid in the sea is considered a powerful omen, though whether of good fortune or ill varies with her mood.
Though nereids never leave the sea for mortal lovers, they have been known to bestow a blessing of divine inspiration on bards and musicians who win their admiration and affection. Proving oneself worthy of such a gift is no small feat; those who have managed it are celebrated as near-mythical ancestors among the Northmen and the Northmarchain. The legendary bard Celscede is said to have begun his career as a youth walking along the rock-littered Breidhain shore; his idle song won a nereid's kiss and set him on the path to greatness.
Known Range: Any of the world's wild seas.
