Necromancer


Necromancy is the darkest of the magical arts. Those who practice it are often feared and shunned. The necromancer draws her power from the lower planes, seeking out forbidden knowledge to manipulate the energies of life and death at her whim. Their unwholesome involvement with demons, devils and undead causes many necromancers to become warped and twisted souls, willing to undertake any horror for the promise of personal gain. Most civilized societies regard necromancers with deep distrust, when they do not outlaw the practice of such tainted arts altogether.

A rare few necromancers study the nether planes not so that they can command demons or enslave the unliving as their personal servants, but rather to understand and ultimately destroy these abominations. Theirs is a precarious balance: those who delve too deeply into the black arts risk corruption and madness. Even the best intentions cannot always guard their sanity or protect them from the misunderstandings of those who believe all necromancers must be evil.

Necromantic spells are oriented toward the lower planes. Many of their effects deal with hellish fire and darkness, while other spells manipulate negative energy to drain the living or control the dead. Necromancers make fair combat casters and possess some limited healing effects, but the greatest strength of the class is in their array of auxiliary and information-gathering effects, and in their specialization on demons and undead.
