Naiad

Appearance: Naiads bear a passing resemblance to elven or human youths and maidens of strange, wild beauty, but there is no mistaking them for mortal beings. Their skin glistens with the translucent sheen of water; their hair undulates around them as if underwater. Many have vestigial scales or spreading fins, and featherlike gills blossom along the sides of their necks. A naiad's voice possesses a haunting, murmuring quality reminiscent of water running over rocks. They are slender, graceful creatures who move with unearthly ease through the water.
Known Behaviors: Most naiads are reclusive beings who vanish into water at the first sign of a trespassing human nearby, but a rare few are curious enough to linger and watch from hiding. They can sometimes be drawn out by displays of kindness or to aid those in danger of drowning. According to the folktales, naiads sometimes fall in love with mortals of exceptional comeliness and noble blood, and have even left their sacred springs to wed their mortal lovers. These unions always end sorrowfully, usually when the mortal breaks a promise and intrudes upon the naiad's privacy.
Known Range: Any clear, pure freshwater in a wilderness region.
