Mystic

Mystics are spellcasters whose focus lies in the power of the mind. Theirs is an inward-looking art, highly disciplined and centered upon the harmony of body and spirit. Many mystics are trained in remote monasteries or under the individual tutelage of masters; unlike other schools of magic, mysticism makes no use of written texts or arcane theories in its practice. Its adherents are able to cast their spells by thought alone, requiring neither word nor gesture, but this freedom comes with a price. Mystics are disadvantaged in the more traditional skills of magic, having never learned to read runes or consciously analyze their methods in order to develop new spells on their own.

Outside their enclaves, mystics are occasionally encountered as diviners, diplomats or assassins. The subtlety of the mindmage's art makes him a particularly effective negotiator, as he can read his opponent's thoughts for hidden secrets and play them to his advantage. In the less scrupulous reaches of the underworld, and in domains ruled by harsh or paranoid lords, some mystics use their talents for truth-finding and ability to manipulate pain to work as inquisitors.

One on one, the mystic is the most effective combat mage against a living opponent. Their intense specialization in attacking individual minds, however, leaves mystics highly vulnerable to multiple or non-sentient enemies. Beyond combat, mysticism offers an array of divinations and some limited healing effects, although the emphasis on self-sufficiency means that the mystic is far better at healing himself than anyone else.
