Herbs and Flowers

Medicinal plants and other valuable herbs are cultivated throughout Meditra. Numerous varieties also grow wild across Calantyr, the Twelve Kingdoms, and as far north as the Spinning Winds.

Characters with the Herbalism skill automatically know all information listed on this page, including how to identify, harvest, preserve and prepare the herbs (although skill checks may be required to do so). Where another skill or a Knowledge provides the same information, this has been listed with the plant's entry.

Black Comfrey
Also known as "bonebreak comfrey" and "bruisewort," this herb is distinguishable from its many close cousins by its bruised-looking dark purple flowers, which droop from its lightly furred stems. It is most commonly found in light forest and shaded clearings, and can be found from spring until late autumn. The leaves of black comfrey can be mashed and made into a poultice, which speeds the healing of broken bones (halving the healing time if used in conjunction with Medicine). A cluster of black comfrey plants, harvested carefully, usually produces BC6x10 ss worth of medicine (requires an Herbalism check to refine; the raw herb's value is only a few coppers).

Feverfew
Feverfew is a summer herb that grows in low, sunny-green bushes dotted with small daisylike flowers. Its leaves give off a lemony scent when crushed. It can be prepared either as a concentrated tea to alleviate headaches and break fevers, or mixed into an ointment to treat skin rashes. A moderate-sized plant, harvested carefully, usually produces BC6x10 ss worth of medicine (requires an Herbalism check to refine; the raw herb's value is only a few coppers).

Heart's Desire
Skills and Knowledges: Poison Lore
Heart's Desire is a climbing vine with fragrant, heart-shaped leaves. It can be found on ruined stone walls and rocky hillsides in the foothills of the Irontooths and scattered throughout the Twelve Kingdoms. Its clusters of tiny, sweet-smelling white flowers have bright red stamens and are sacred to Tharacia. The flowers can be found from late spring through late summer.

When crushed and steeped in wine, the blossoms act as a powerful aphrodisiac (Level 2 ingestion poison, save vs. End/2 or succumb to extreme amorousness after an onset time of 10 minutes; effects last BC4+1 hours. A successful save indicates the character still feels the herb's effects but can resist acting on them). A preparation of Heart's Desire fetches 100 ss on the market.

Pauper's Torch
Skills and Knowledges: Wilderness Lore, Agriculture
The tall yellow spikes of pauper's torch grow in meadows, grasslands, and light forests from late spring until first frost. The plant's tough, woody central stalks grow as high as a man's waist and sprout innumerable tiny yellow flowers from all sides. If cut, dried, and coated in tallow (a process that takes at least a week to perform properly), the stalks can be burned like torches. They give off a colorful blue-green flame and last up to three hours each. A bundle of prepared paupers' torches sells for 5 ss.

Woundmoss
The long gray-green beards of woundmoss grow from tree limbs in the Saltmire, the Bilewater, and other brackish swamps. Woundmoss is often confused with beard lichen and ghosthair moss, two very similar-looking plants; it can be distinguished by its choice of host trees and spongy texture. Packed into an open wound, it will staunch light bleeding (stabilizing a person from -10 to -14 Stamina; no effect on heavy or magically induced bleeding) and helps with First Aid (+2 healing per successful FA check, noncumulative with other material-granted bonuses). Woundmoss must be used fresh and loses its efficacy 24 hours after harvest.
