Hazard

Hazard is an Ardasi dice game that has spread slowly west. It was introduced to the Coeur by refugees from the siege of Vir in 1217. Since then, the game has been popularized in the Coeur by Vitail Merovain, proprietor of the Warrens.

Rules
Hazard requires two six-sided dice and a flat surface. It is played by a group of at least two people. One player is the caster. The others collectively play as the bank. In formal games there is a third role -- that of the groom-porter -- though this is not necessary.

A game of hazard proceeds as follows:

  1. The caster bets some amount of money; this is the stake.
  2. The bank "covers the stake" by putting up an equal amount of money.
  3. The caster declares a number between 5 and 9 inclusive. This number is the main.
  4. The caster rolls.
    • If he rolls the main, he wins (throws in or nicks).
    • If he rolls a 2 or a 3, he loses (throws out).
    • If he rolls an 11, he wins if the main is 7, and otherwise loses.
    • If he rolls a 12, he wins if the main is 6 or 8, and otherwise loses.
    • If he rolls anything else, that number becomes the chance. Proceed to step 5.
  5. Each combination of chance and main has a set of odds associated with it; see the table below for details. The groom-porter declares these odds.
  6. The bank adds or removes funds from the table to reflect the odds. If the bank does not add sufficient funds, the game is off.
  7. The caster may raise the stake. The bank may cover it. If the bank does not cover, the game is off.
  8. The caster rolls.
    • If he rolls the chance, he wins.
    • If he rolls the main, he loses.
    • If he rolls anything else, repeat step 8.

Odds by main and chance
Main Chance
4 5 6 7 8 9 10
5 4/3 -- 4/5 2/3 4/5 1 4/3
6 5/3 5/4 -- 5/6 1 5/4 5/3
7 2 3/2 6/5 -- 6/5 3/2 2
8 5/3 5/4 1 5/6 -- 5/4 5/3
9 4/3 1 4/5 2/3 4/5 -- 4/3

If the caster wins, he collects all of the money on the table. If the caster loses, each of the other players wins a share of the pot. Each player's share is proportional to the amount of the stake that that player covered.

The caster may keep playing until he loses three times in a row. He must then give the dice to another player, who becomes the new caster.

An Example Game
Rwen Yrille, Mama Rum, and Lanier, chief investigator for the southeast ward, play a game of hazard. It is decided that Rwen will be the caster and that Mama Rum and Lanier will form the bank.

  1. Rwen puts ten shields in the center of the table, establishing the stake at 10 ss.
  2. Lanier puts in 7 ss and Mama Rum puts in 3 ss, covering the stake. The pot is at 20 ss.
  3. Rwen declares a main of six.
  4. Rwen rolls a two and therefore loses. Mama Rum wins back her part of the stake plus three-tenths of Rwen's wager for a total of 6 ss; similarly, Lanier wins 14 ss.

Rwen orders another mug of ale for Lanier and the three decide to play again.

  1. Rwen sets the stake at 15 ss.
  2. Mama Run and Lanier cover with 7 ss and 8 ss, respectively.
  3. Rwen declares a main of seven.
  4. Rwen rolls an eight, which becomes the chance. He now wins on a roll of eight and loses on a roll of seven.
  5. Mr. Keyes, the groom-porter, indicates odds of 6/5.
  6. Rwen adds an odds stake of 10 ss.
  7. The bank must put in 12 ss to cover, since the odds are 6/5. Mama Rum and Lanier cover with 8 ss and 4 ss, respectively.
  8. Rwen rolls and gets a 5. This is a null result, so he must roll again.
  9. Rwen rolls a 7 and therefore loses again. Mama Rum takes 14 ss from the initial pot (her 7 ss plus 7 of Rwen's 15) and Lanier takes 16 ss (his 8 ss plus 8 of Rwen's 15). In addition, Mama Rum takes back her 8 ss from the odds stake along with 7 of Rwen's 10 ss, while Lanier takes back his 4 ss along with 3 of Rwen's 10.

They then decide to stop playing. Mama Rum finishes up 17 ss, Lanier up 18 ss, and Rwen down 35 ss.
