__The Eastern Dark__
The Hillmen are on the warpath; in a great teeming mass they have ridden forth from their ancestral homelands to occupy the valley between Cathilcarn and the Irontooths. They have razed the farms and villages in those lands and sacked Vir, its greatest city. In all the lands surrounding Vir, only the wizards' college, the Dead Tower, remains standing. The displaced Virians have scattered, some seeking refuge in Calantyr, others in Aridoc -- but the greatest part of them seems to have fled east into the Ahaltic Plains, which the Hillmen call home.

The horde seems not to be satisfied with Vir. Even before that city fell, Hillman spies and witches began appearing in the Coeur. Something holds them back for now -- but with winter's thaw the threat of raids begins anew.

What has driven the Hillmen out of the east? And why does the Emperor of Aridoc fear the Coeur's demise more than any of its citizens?

Summary
It has been nearly a year since the Hillmen razed the city of Vir, and the bulk of the horde, according to most rumors, remains camped in the hills nearby. On the streets of the Coeur there is a general sense that the Hillman threat has passed -- that they are satisfied with their new territory and will not press further west. Few of the Parthenon's experienced adventurers, however, would share this optimism. Over the past year, they have had a number of run-ins with the Hillmen, the most memorable of which are listed here:

- Last winter, the Hillmen seized the keep of Sir Durathain, a knight in the service of Wrymeade Earl Wrymeade. They occupied the castle for nearly a month before being flushed out by the Parthenon's mercenaries.
- A short time later, a party accidentally discovered a Hillman spy residing in Lechlade, a small town about a half-day's ride north of the Coeur. The spy killed himself upon being discovered. Among other things, he had evidently been ferrying Hillmen across the Windhurst River in secret.
- A group of Hillman witches was found to have occupied Penshaw Farm, an abandoned estate northeast of the city. Only one adventurer escaped with his life. Following an expedition led by Felheidh, an Aridon knight, the estate is now vacant once more.
- Last summer the Hillmen gained the confidence of Sir Pennory, a knight in the service of Gildorath Earl Gildorath. Several of Gildorath's knights perished due to the Hillmen's machinations, until Pennory's treachery was finally uncovered by another party from the Parthenon.

Despite the potentially grave implications of these events, only Sir Durathain's murder attracted any notice. Pennory's disappearance, while a subject of much gossip, has not popularly been associated with the Hillmen.
