__**Drugs in Coeur d'Ennui**__
The underworld in Coeur d'Ennui is noted for its active trade in various illicit and unsavory substances, despite the guards' sporadic efforts to suppress such indulgences or at least keep them out of sight.

Characters with the Streetwise skill are generally familiar with the names, appearances, and effects of all drugs listed here, and can procure most drugs with a successful skill check. Characters with Herbalism, Poison Lore, or Alchemy can recognize the drugs and extract them from their raw materials.

__**Dreamflowers**__
The sweet-smelling, pale blue blossoms of the dreamflower plant are dried and crushed into dust, then inhaled or, more commonly, steeped into a strong tea and drunk. This causes euphoria and lassitude, often causing the user to slip into prolonged slumber filled with pleasant dreams. The sedative properties of dreamflowers are valuable to healers, and so the plant has never been outlawed in Calantyr, although illicit use remains a problem.

__**Halfling Pipeweed**__
The tall, five-leaved stalks of halfling pipeweed are a common sight in their towns outside Coeur d'Ennui. In Tarrybuck it is grown in windowboxes and thick, hedgelike shrubs, and is not only smoked but used in a variety of local crafts; some halflings steep the flower buds in locally brewed beer for added flavor. Those who enjoy smoking the weed claim that it enhances gregariousness, makes plays and musical performances more enjoyable, and whets the appetite -- all unadulterated virtues from a halfling point of view.

Other, dourer souls argue that it makes users stupid and lazy, and probably explains why halflings have never managed to master any craft more demanding than baking pies and tootling horns. While the use of pipeweed is generally regarded as a sign of weak character in Coeur d'Ennui, it is not illegal.

__**Smokerock**__
Few people know exactly what smokerock is made of; it does not seem to be derived from any natural plant. It arrived as an import from Vir shortly before that city's fall to the eastern barbarians, and most of the supply in the city's south side can still be traced back to alchemists and crime lords who fled as refugees from Vir. When first used, it creates a sense of dramatic euphoria, energy, and joyfulness; however, this leads to a sinking depression that often drives its users to seek more. The drug's efficacy wears off over time, yet its addictiveness is so strong that people continue using it long after the drug's joy evaporated and all it does is stave off the misery it creates.

Smokerock is one of the few drugs to be outlawed in Coeur d'Ennui because it is so addictive and has such pronounced detrimental effects on its users. They lose all interest in eating and wither to walking skeletons, fever-eyed and erratic. Their movements are quick and jerky; they become very excitable, losing control of their impulses. Prolonged use of smokerock causes permanent brain damage. Users who reach that state are colloquially called "wraiths" or "fiends," because the drug has such a hold on them that they hardly seem human at times. As it is impossible to maintain a normal life under smokerock's thrall, most of its users drift to the worst parts of the city's docks, where they survive by petty crime and cause perennial headaches to the city guard.

__**Sniff Powder**__
Once common in Coeur d'Ennui, sniff powder has become rarer and more expensive since the guild wars between the North and South Sides some five years ago and the subsequent breaking of the halfling connection from Vir; as the halflings were the primary connection for that drug, and Vir itself is now a ransacked shell, sniff powder is now almost impossible to find, and its users have moved to other drugs or given up the habit.

It is a finely ground white powder believed to be derived from some tropical plant that grows only south of Pelos. When sniffed, it causes a brief burst of energy and euphoria. Some users also claim that it enhances sexual pleasure. Prolonged use can lead to paranoia, impulsiveness, and heart failure; there are rumors of individuals dying in unsightly fashion with blood streaming from their nostrils after overdoses. However, given the cost and rarity of sniff powder, it has been a long while since any such sight in Coeur d'Ennui. It is now considered an extreme and faintly dangerous luxury, and has some fashionable cachet among the more scandalous circles of the aristocracy. In large part due to its underworld ties, sniff powder is illegal.

__**Witweed**__
The rolled red leaves of witweed, an exotic plant imported from Ardashir or grown in hothouses, can be smoked for increased concentration and alertness. It tends to cause nervousness and insomnia, and prolonged use is known to cause heart failure, but nevertheless it is popular among students, apprentices, and revelers trying to stay awake for a long night of carousing. Witweed is legal but expensive.
