Devils

The classification of "devils" includes several groups of fiends native to the realm of Pandemonium in the Abyss, which is sometimes (inaccurately) called the "Infernal Plane" and which has a strongly lawful orientation, in contrast to the chaos that rules the rest of that limitless pit.
Devils are not a single species. They range from the lowly imp to the most formidable pit fiend; all that unites them is their limitless evil and their adherence to an iron-hard code of law. There are numerous sub-races among their kind, of which the most well-known is the baatezu, but a devil's identity is not fixed. Devils who distinguish themselves above the norm for their kind can win ascension to a superior race; thus imps can ascend to become osyluths, or erinyes can ascend to become bloodfeathers.
Hierarchy is everything in the eyes of devils: they are master manipulators who scheme constantly to increase their own status and bring low their enemies. The laws of Pandemonium are draconian, impossibly tangled and often seemingly arbitrary, but all devils abide by them and take excessive glee in punishing those who break them. The game of alliance and betrayal fascinates them endlessly. Once a devil gives its word, it will honor its agreements, but they are cunning fiends who delight in weaving loopholes all through their bargains and twisting the meaning of language to their own ends.
Devils can be summoned to Bierilon by various unholy rites, most of which are necromantic or linked to the worship of evil deities. Though they can be powerful allies, they always place their own interests first: inflicting woe and suffering upon the world, and corrupting mortals into evil.
