Demons

Demons are fiends native to the Abyss, a many-layered, infinite pit of evil and raging chaos. Their forms are as diverse and monstrous as the raw tumult that spawns them; some are seductively lovely, others so hideous that merely gazing upon them can drive onlookers to madness.

There are many breeds of demons, and their lusts ensure that new ones are constantly arising. The dominant race is the tanar'ri, which encompasses everything from wretched, barely sentient dretches to the balors that stand near the apex of the Abyssal hierarchy. Other, older species exist but have been pushed to the forgotten recesses of the Abyss, where they lurk and fester. Most scholars agree that demons are the embodiments of human vices, so it seems probable that the older variants represent the dark urges of strange and ancient beings.

Only the most superficial order exists in the Abyss. Demons are constantly at war with each other, the devils of Pandemonium, and the heavenly forces of Amalthir, both because they are inherently violent beings and because the chaos of the battlefield opens endless possibilities for advancement, betrayal, and the murder of commanders and underlings alike. The only law in the Abyss is that might makes right. Whoever can prevail by brute strength, under-handed dealings, or manipulation of others' desires is entitled to rule -- at least until he is overthrown by another.

Necromancers and evil priests, among others, can summon demons to Bierilon through various unholy rites. Though only a great fool would trust them to do anything but wreak havoc, demons are exceedingly good at that. They are agents of corruption and destruction, and few mortals have the strength to resist them in either capacity.
