Creating Spells

A caster may attempt to create spells. To do this, she must:

1. Possess the Skill Magical Theory;
2. Have a laboratory with the proper equipment;
3. Buy the perishable materials needed to create the spell;
4. Spend the time necessary to research, create, and test the spell. This will be reflected by the character's expenditure of five (5) experience point per level of the spell created.
5. Have reached at least the level of the spell created.

The character will be allowed three attempts per week, per spell. This normally will be done outside of Parthos, and presided over by an PGM. A character may only create one spell at a time.

Labs
The caster must have the space and equipment necessary to research and create the spell. Each spell level requires certain equipment; the higher the level, the more sophisticated (and expensive) the equipment required. The cost of a laboratory in silver is Spell Level squared x5. Thus, a First Level lab would be 5 silver shields; a Second Level 20 silver shields, a 10th level 500 silver shields, etc. The lab must be upgraded level by level. Prices are cumulative.

Proposal
In practice, the caster first must determine the level and send the proposed spell and level to the PGMs taking spell creation requests. A discussion with the caster will most likely follow...the level may be too high or too low; there is a similar spell already existing; etc.

Materials
After the Spell Level is determined and approved, and assuming the caster has the proper lab, the next step is the purchase the perishable materials which all spells use up during research and testing. The cost of these materials will be:

BC10 x Spell Level

Creation
At this point, materials in hand, the caster is ready to test the spell. She will make a roll based on Magical Theory Skill Stat minus the following modification:

50 - Caster Level + (Spell Level x2)

She must have at least a 1% chance to create the spell (based on the above modification to the Magical Theory skill) to attempt creation.

If this roll is successful, the spell is created and is added to the caster's character sheet and their wiki Custom Spells page, accessible by the character. The spell is not, however, added to the general Parthos spell lists.

If the roll fails, the caster may try again. To do so, she must again purchase the perishable materials. Since she is now familiar with that spell's process, her roll will have a 10% bonus. The caster may try as often as she wishes, with additional materials purchases, with cumulative bonuses on rolls. Note: the caster is limited to 3 attempts per week.

Time
In addition to materials and labs, creating spells takes time; the higher the spell level, the more time required to create it. The time cost is accomplished by the character's spending experience points at the rate of five (5) experience points per level of the spell created. This cost is applied once per spell, not per attempt to create that spell.

Teaching
If the caster chooses to teach a spell she has created, the normal requirement of 5 levels above the spell level is waived; however, the student must still pay 50 gold per spell level to the Marketplace for materials, plus any fee the teacher requires.

Example: Old Mage, a 10th Level caster, researches a simple spell, which he and the PGMs determine is a second level spell. He has the necessary lab (in fact, looking ahead, he has upgraded his lab to 5th Level, more than enough to research the spell in question). The materials for the spell have cost him 12 silver shields...he rolled a 42 on a BC10, which gave him 6x2 =12. He is ready to roll! His Magical Theory Skill stat is 85, so a successful roll will be under 85-(50-10+4), or 85-44=41. Alas, he rolls a 58. He decides to pursue the spell, and again spends 12 ss for the materials. His required roll is now 51 (41+10). He rolls a 38! He is now the proud owner of Old Mage's Crotchety Word. Had he failed in the second attempt, his third roll would have been based on 61
