Classes are the starting point for the character templates, which determine the statistical features of the characters General and Combat stats, and they also are the determining factor for starting spells, powers and skill selections. Once a class is chosen it is usually for life, it is near impossible to change a character class, so choose wisely.

The classes break down into several general categories, depending upon the classes' strengths and weaknesses. There are “casters”, those classes whose primary abilities lie in their [[Spells spells]], which include enchanters, sorcerers, elementalists, priests, necromancers, druids, illusionists and mystics. There are also “skill” classes, whose main focal point is their specialized set of [[skills skills]]. These include nightblades, brigands, scouts and rogues. “[[combat Combat]]” classes are those which specialize in physical combat, such as warriors and monks. There are also classes which do not fall into function-specific categories, like Paladins, which are good at fighting with a number of holy powers, or Bards, who can become good casters, but do not begin with a starting spell list. These classes rely on their [[Powers powers]], and are called "power" classes. Some classes, such as Priests and Brigands, can fit in more than one category.

Note that the categories are for conceptual purposes only, and have no rules effect (other than skill classes all getting extra skill DPs per level. See [[Advancement Advancement]].
