Brigands are the muscle of the underworld, relying on brute force and intimidation to accomplish what a rogue might achieve with stealth and subtlety. They are commonly encountered as thugs, kneebreakers, and enforcers in the employ of thieves' guilds, policing dark alleys under their own notions of law. Some make their livings as highwaymen, accosting travelers by night and avoiding the Duke's patrols by day. A few even take to piracy, conducting their nefarious business on the high seas instead of in dark alleys.
Few brigands take to the adventuring life. Those that do are usually motivated by profit rather than idealism, offering their loyalty to the highest bidder—as long as he can keep up the payments. Sometimes they hire out as bounty hunters, using their superior knowledge of the city's underworld to track down their prey. Occasionally a brigand will join an adventuring group to get out of the city and avoid heat from law enforcement for a while. One who has fallen into disfavor with his guildmaster might seek refuge among adventurers, and perhaps pick up the lifestyle from his new acquaintances. Though it is rare for a brigand to be able to match a warrior's fighting prowess toe-to-toe, his street savvy and greater raw strength make him a valuable asset nevertheless.
