Beholder

Appearance: Beholders are floating orbs of alien flesh that measure eight feet in diameter and are fringed with two-foot eyestalks. An enormous central eye sits above a drooling maw filled with sharp teeth. Two smaller, eyeless stalks coil underneath the beholder's body; these weaker tendrils are useless in combat but are used to push food into its mouth and manipulate small objects. Beholders sometimes wear magical rings or bracelets on these stalks.
There is a great range of variation in beholder types. Some have scaled skin, some have armored plates, and still others have wet, slimy skin. Some eyestalks are stiff and jointed, while others have flexible, rubbery tentacles or serpentine, scaled ones like snakes' bodies. Beholders vary in color from pink to yellow to green. Most beholders consider their own personal appearance to be the only "correct" one, and loathe all other beholders as disgusting aberrations from the norm.
Known Behaviors: Beholders are a hateful, greedy and arrogant species who make no secret of their disdain for lesser races (whom they find visually repugnant as well as contemptibly weak and landbound) or, for that matter, "imperfect" beholders. They have difficulty controlling this hatred even to achieve some greater end, and so rarely cooperate with non-beholders.
Known Range: Any.
