Basilisk

Appearance: A basilisk is a squat, thick-bodied reptile with eight legs and a heavy tail. Its leathery hide has very small scales and is most commonly dull brown or dirty red with a lighter, cream-colored or yellow underbelly. Its eyes are blank, seemingly blind white spheres that hold an eerie green opalescence. Fully mature adults have a spot shaped like a four-rayed star on their foreheads; this is usually white or light yellow. A basilisk is six feet long from nose to rump; its tail adds another five or six feet. It weighs about five hundred pounds.
Basilisks move with an ungainly, waddling gait, and their tails drag on the ground behind them, leaving a characteristic S-shaped line over their tracks.
Known Behaviors: Basilisks are extremely lazy hunters. Their favorite tactic is to lie in wait among grasses, rocks, or swamp vegetation, caked with dirt or small stones so that they do not stick out. When prey animals venture within reach of their gaze, the basilisk simply raises its head enough to look at the victim and turn it to stone, then waddles over to eat the petrified flesh. They can seldom be bothered to spend any more effort tracking things down, and rarely pursue fleeing victims.
Known Range: Any temperate or swampy region.
