Arcane Alchemy


In addition to using materials listed in the Apothecary, characters with the Alchemy skill and Knowledge: Arcana can make the following items. All items require a successful Alchemy check and Level 1 lab to create; a failed roll indicates that materials are wasted. A character can make one arcane alchemical per day.

The first number listed with each entry is the creation cost per item or dose. The second is its resale value, with modifiers for Courtier's Grace or Streetwise if applicable.

Bloodsecret Ink - Watery reddish ink that disappears as it dries. The ink is formulated with a drop of blood from the creature(s) intended to receive its messages; missives written in Bloodsecret Ink remain invisible until they touch the hands of a recipient attuned to that batch of ink, whereupon the ink reappears. Each dose is sufficient to write roughly 150 words. (50 ss/100 ss if made to order; otherwise no resale value) [Requires Expert Arcana to make.]

Brightstone - Bead of alchemical compounds coated in a layer of dried clay. Upon striking a hard surface, the bead cracks, creating a bright light that has a 50% chance of blinding creatures within 10' for the remainder of that round. The Brightstone continues to give off heatless light equal to a torch's for 30 minutes after the initial flash. (30 ss/50 ss)

Drying Powder - Fine yellowish powder wrapped into a paper ball. Dries up to 10 cubic feet of liquid if sprinkled atop it. Water dries in one full round; more viscous liquids may take longer to dehydrate. If thrown at a water- or slime-based creature (maximum range is 25' and requires a CA check to hit; can also be thrown up to 50' with a sling), Drying Powder inflicts 2BC10 noncritting damage per dose. Hallorin's Filter Mask - Bizarre-looking contraption of wasps'-nest paper sandwiched with layers of thinly cut charcoal. Buckled straps hold the mask over the wearer's nose and mouth. Wearer is protected against inhalation poisons and gases, and gains a +25 bonus to save vs. stench-based effects, but suffers a -25 penalty to MA for V-component spells, vocal Bardic Powers, and scroll reading; other effects that require free access to the wearer's mouth are similarly hindered. Mask is effective for 30 minutes once donned. (75 ss/100 ss) [Requires Expert Arcana to make.]

Hallorin's Protective Salve - Chalky white paste with specks of green and red scattered throughout. Applied to bare skin, it protects its wearer from the first 5 points of fire or acid damage suffered each round, up to a maximum of 30 points. The Salve is effective for one hour after application, then dries up and flakes off. Each dose covers one Medium creature. (75 ss/100 ss) [Requires Expert Arcana to make.]

Moonlight Drops - Tiny silver bottle with a glass eyedropper built into the bottom of its lid. Contains a clear, luminous sky-blue liquid that dilates the user's pupils greatly, conferring 100' Darkvision for one hour. (15 ss/25 ss) [Requires Expert Arcana to make.]

Vanishing Ink - Pale green ink that disappears as it dries. When a message written in Vanishing Ink is held over a flame or equivalent heat, the words reappear in deep reddish-brown. Each dose is sufficient to write roughly 150 words. (30 ss/50 ss, requires SW or CG to sell)
