__**Advancement**__
__**Bands and Levels**__

Now that you have your character, you will want to develop his abilities and make him an important part of this world. Parthos is designed for many different types of role-players, and you can take advantage of any or all of the opportunities to advance and enrich your character. In general, there are three ways your character can gain experience: Role-playing, Boardplay, Combat, and Tournaments.

----

__**Roleplaying**__
This is the foundation of the game, and a chance for you to let your imagination run free. If you have thoughtfully created your character, you have a very good idea of what kind of person she is. You might even have an idea of her background, her hopes, her fears, the little quirks that set her apart from the crowd. In other words, a good character is much, much more than a set of numbers.

Although role-playing is listed here as one of the options for character development, it doesn't stand alone; it permeates the entire game. You can role-play while watching the fights, while engaged in combat, or while involved in a tournament. If you do, not only will your character gain the necessary experience to advance, but you will be rewarded with a character who is fun to play. Also, people are drawn to good role-players; the all important friendships and alliances must be developed by creative interaction with others.

Role-playing experience points are determined by the PGM based on many factors, including, but not limited to: How well the character interacts with others and involves others in the role-play, how well the character plays his alignment, how well the character initiates and develops a story line. In general, a character who role-plays well may receive 1-20 role-playing experience points for a night in Parthos. Note that 20 experience points will be rare, given for truly outstanding role-playing. Since role-playing is a creative activity, and difficult to pin down to mere numbers, be aware that each PGM may see things differently. You will have more fun if you role-play for the fun of it; if you do, the experience points will follow.

__**Boardplay**__
Outside of scheduled sessions, some players like to write short stories to help develop their characters, and build more of a background behind them. While these can, and have, incorporated more than one player, boardplay posts are usually built individually, with the characters typically all being a product of the writer's imagination.

Some characters also use the Boards to complete Streetwise or Courtier's Grace Contracts. (This option is only available to characters who have raised either of the two stats to 50 or higher).

__**Combat**__
Whether you are a Warrior, Spellcaster, or Rogue, you might want to test your skills in combat. You may be facing a friend or foe, or be a part of a group trying to vanquish a monster threatening the city. Remember, each class and race has its strengths and weaknesses; a caster facing a strong warrior must use wits as well as the power of magick. Many times good strategy can overcome even a stronger opponent. Read the __**Combat Combat**__ rules carefully. If you are a caster or if your character has __**Powers Powers**__, be sure to become familiar with the __**Magic Magic**__ section. Combat experience points are given for each fight a player participates in; for details, see the __**Combat Combat**__ section.

__**Tourneys**__
Often, a PGM will have a scenario in mind that requires a group of characters to solve a problem or remove a threat. Tournaments vary in length; some can take several weeks; some can be accomplished in an evening. In addition, a PGM may design a tourney-like setting within the Parthenon itself. In general, tournaments are outside regular Parthos hours and require a time commitment from the players. As part of the group, it is your responsibility to honor that commitment, outside of any unavoidable conflicts.

There are many ways a tournament can come about; most often it is something a PGM has designed, but sometimes it springs directly from a player's role-playing. The PGM may let it be known that he needs certain types of characters to accomplish a goal, or he may choose one player to recruit others. Here again, is where the friendships you have formed become very important. Many tournaments require that characters have a minimum level of experience because of the difficulties or dangers involved; many are designed for beginning characters to test their mettle. Some require that the characters be of a certain __**Alignment alignment**__, or rule out some alignments (a combination of Paladins and Night Blades might be interesting, but the chance of these characters working together well is slim). Although players may suggest an idea for a tournament, please keep in mind that we cannot guarantee that such suggestions will be accepted because of PGM availability, potential conflicts, etc.

Tournament experience points are given both for combat (if applicable; some tourneys may not even include combat) and for role-playing, determined by the PGM running the tournament. This is your chance to shine; you character can solve a problem, defeat a powerful enemy, even help save the world. You can open up new skills through role playing, and develop skills you already have. You will be more effective if you concentrate on having fun rather than worrying about how many experience points you receive. Don't be afraid to ham it up; let your imagination run free, and your character advancement will follow.

----

__**Leveling Up**__
Levels are a general indicator of a character's experience. As you gain experience points by any or all of the methods listed above, Your character's level will slowly but steadily rise. The chart below lists the number of experience points for each level. When you reach the minimum number of experience points for the next level, you will receive sixty (60) Development Points to spend as you wish, within the following guidelines:

* 20 Development Points on General Stats
* 20 Development Points on Combat Stats
* 20 Development Points on Skills

Combat Stats: Combat Ability, Defense, Speed, Stamina, Strength, Magickal Aptitude, Power.
General Stats: Agility, Endurance, Perception, IQ, Intuition, Willpower, Luck.

(Note that Scouts and Rogues receive 30 Skill DPs, while Brigands and Night Blades receive 25.)

Your character sheet will have ratios (under purchase price) that determine how many development points (dps) are needed to raise a particular stat.

__**Developing Stats over 100**__
All stats including Skills, Combat and General stats may be developed up to a maximum of 150. However, the following additions to normal stat purchases are in effect for any stat developed over 100:

101-110: +1 to Purchase Price
111-120: +2 to Purchase Price
121-130: +3 to Purchase Price
131-140: +4 to Purchase Price
141-150: +5 to Purchase Price

Example: Swiftboy's CA is now at 100. Normally his purchase for CA would be 2. If he wants to raise it, the purchase price goes to 3, up to 110, 4 up to 120, etc.

The progession chart under __**Bands and Levels**__ will show you how many experience points are needed to advance from level to level.
