Acquiring Spells

A character may acquire spells by:

Restrictions on Acquiring Spells

Opening Spell Lists
To begin learning spells from a new list, a character must spend experience points to "open" that list.

If the character is a caster, spend 200 experience points. If the character is a non-caster, including those with Powers but no spells, spend 300 experience points. Exceptions: Bards pay 250 experience points.

Note: If spending the required experience points drops the character below his current level according to the experience points required to attain the level, the character's level will not actually drop, but will only mean that additional time is required to reach the next level. In other words, the character will not lose any stats gained. This will give him the right to purchase spells from that list, and reflects the time needed for training in a new magical discipline. In no case may the character spend the required experience points if this would technically drop him to two (2) levels below his current level.

Purchasing Spells from the Marketplace
Characters may purchase spells as a regular Marketplace transaction.

The initial cost to open a spell list with one Level 1 spell is 1500ss. The cost to purchase subsequent spells on the same spell list is 100ss per spell level.

Restricted Spell Lists
The lists Divine and Druid may not be used by any other class, except in the case of Paladins, who may rarely be granted a Divine spell.

Paladins
Paladins are not normally spellcasters, having Powers instead; however, in extremely rare circumstances, a paladin may be granted a spell by his deity.

Teaching Spells

A spellcaster may teach any spell he or she knows, on his or her base list or another, if his equivalent caster level is at least five levels higher than the spell he or she wishes to teach. This restriction does not apply to spells created by the teacher through Magical Theory.

To effectively teach and learn a spell, the following rolls must be made successfully by the teacher and student:

Teacher: Will + (MT/5)
Student: I.Q. + (MT/5)

If the teacher is teaching a spell from his/her original spell list (eg, an illusionist teaching an illusion spell), 15 will be subtracted from his roll.

Note: Magical items can provide exceptions to these rules and restrictions. In all cases, the magical item description supercedes these rules. For example, an 11th Level Illusionist would be able to teach a 6th Level Illusionist spell, but not a 7th Level Illusionist spell. If he also knew 6 levels of spells from the Enchanter list, he could teach a Level 1 Enchanter spell, but not a level 2 spell from that list.

Though a student is allowed to learn only one spell on each list per week, he may attempt learning that spell once per day as necessary.

Costs for learning from a teacher:
There is an overhead cost of 750ss to open a new list. This is money spent to the Marketplace, not another player, as it represents books, materials, and other ritual paraphernalia involved in learning spells. Spells carry a materials cost of 50ss per spell level.
